About Us
Celebrating the Achievements of the Global South
The South-South Awards is a high-level gala event highlighting contributions by governments, the United Nations, private sector and civil society towards the advancement of the Millennium Development Goals and sustainable development across the global South.
World leaders, senior government officials, ambassadors, heads of international organizations, celebrities and world-class musicians gather each year to honor outstanding contributions to social development, economic growth and environmental awareness.
The South-South Awards recognizes individuals and organizations representing governments, the United Nations, business and civil society who contribute to the advancement of the Millennium Development Goals and sustainable development. Past Awards and Recognitions have been presented to Heads of State, United Nations leaders, global chief executives, celebrities and civil society icons.
The event is sponsored and supported by the permanent missions of Member States to the United Nations, United Nations agencies, the South-South Steering Committee for Sustainable Development (SS-SCSD), the International Organization for South-South Cooperation (IOSSC), as well as philanthropic foundations and charities.
Our Mission
Advancing sustainable development across the global South
Our overall mission is to:
- Support efforts to promote sustainable development on a global scale by recognizing significant contributions from governments, the UN, businesses and civil society.
- Advance the Millennium Development Goals and Post-2015 Development Agenda through awareness, outreach and recognition.
- Highlight areas of best practice and cooperation between and among countries of the global South.
The world has committed itself to an ambitious and universal new agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals, that continues the successes of the MDGs and incorporates the three dimensions of sustainable development: social progress, economic growth, and environmental harmony. The South-South Awards supports the efforts of stakeholders in the development process by identifying the most outstanding contributions and practices that can be shared across national or regional boundaries by other countries of the global South.
